By train from Zurich to Milan: tips for the Gotthard route

By Simon Abplanalp ·

Just over three hours from Zurich to Milano Centrale: connections, saver tickets, seat reservations and tips for travellers from Switzerland.

Fast and comfortable through the Gotthard Base Tunnel

Since the Gotthard Base Tunnel opened – at 57 kilometres the longest railway tunnel in the world – Milan is only about three hours and twenty minutes from Zurich. EuroCity trains run directly from Zurich HB to Milano Centrale, stopping at Zug, Arth-Goldau, Bellinzona and Lugano, among others.

How to travel cheaply

  • Book early: saver tickets are much cheaper than the standard fare and limited in number.
  • Travel off-peak: early-morning and midweek trains are often cheaper.
  • Use your travelcard: check whether your Swiss travelcard gives a discount on the Swiss section.
  • Reserve a seat: trains are very busy at weekends and during holidays.

From Ticino to Milan

From Lugano and Chiasso, Milan is only about an hour away. Besides the EuroCity trains, TILO regional trains connect Ticino with Lombardy – including Milan Malpensa airport.

Prefer the scenic route?

If you have time, take the old Gotthard mountain line with its spiral tunnels and the church of Wassen. The Gotthard Panorama Express runs there in season.

Conclusion

On Zurich–Milan, the train is often faster and more relaxing than flying: no check-in, arrival right in the city centre. Compare connections and prices below with Omio.
