eSIM for the USA: mobile data without the roaming shock
By Simon Abplanalp ·
How much data you need in the US and why an eSIM is cheaper than Swiss roaming.
Using Google Maps, Uber and Instagram in the US on a Swiss plan can lead to a nasty bill. A travel eSIM is usually much cheaper.
How much data?
Navigation and messaging use less than you think. For a two-week road trip, 10 GB is often enough.
Good to know
- The eSIM is data only. Call via WhatsApp or FaceTime.
- Your Swiss number stays active, but turn off its data roaming.
- Coverage in national parks is patchy, so download maps offline.
