Japan trip from Switzerland: entry, JR Pass and internet

By Simon Abplanalp ·

What to sort out before Japan: entry rules, rail pass, IC card and eSIM.

Japan is the trip of a lifetime for many. Sort out a few things beforehand, and on the ground almost everything is surprisingly easy.

Entry

Swiss citizens don’t need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Still, check the current rules before you go.

JR Pass or single tickets?

Since the price increase, the Japan Rail Pass only pays off with lots of long journeys. For Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka, single tickets are often cheaper. In cities, an IC card like Suica is handy.

Internet

With an eSIM you’re online from the moment you land, no pocket Wi-Fi needed. Google Maps works great for public transport.
