London: ETA, passport and tickets for travellers from Switzerland

By Simon Abplanalp ·

Since 2025 Swiss citizens need an ETA for the UK. What that means and what else matters.

London is still one of the most popular city breaks from Zurich, Geneva and Basel. Entry rules have changed, though.

Apply for an ETA

Since April 2025, Swiss nationals also need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Apply online or via the app and pay a fee. Do it a few days before you travel; official information is on gov.uk.

Passport, not ID card

A Swiss ID card is no longer enough to enter the UK. Bring your passport.

On the ground

Tube and buses take contactless card or phone payments. For the Tower or the London Eye, book online, often with a time slot.
